AUSTRALIAN ALPACA DESIGN AWARDS 2011

knitalpaca is proud to present the inaugural Australian Alpaca Design Awards.
The concept was developed:
- to promote Australian alpaca as a viable luxury fibre
- to encourage designers to explore and use alpaca
It is hoped that this year’s awards will develop in the future to become a major textile event.
Eligibility
The Australian Alpaca Design Awards is open to any amateur or professional designer or textile artist.
Entries must be the original work of the designer – not, for example, a garment knitted from commercial pattern.
Entries should be developed to reflect the unique qualities of alpaca as a luxury natural fibre. Any technique is acceptable (knitting, crochet, weaving, felting, etc.), but entries must consist of 100% alpaca OR a blend of at least 60% alpaca with one or more natural fibres.
Categories
- Wearable Fashion – garments (men’s, women’s or children’s) and accessories (scarves, hats, etc.)
- Home Fashions – rugs, throws, hangings, etc.
An award will also be made for the best entry by a person under 16 years.

Entries
Entry fee: $15 per entry (entrants under 16 years: $5 per entry). There is no limit to the number of entries submitted by entrants.
Entrants must send in a completed entry pack with the entry fee by Friday August 19th 2011.
The pack must include:
- a completed entry form (see below)
- designer statement – an explanation of the concept of the piece(s); no more than one A4 page
- details of fibre composition (% alpaca, other fibres, etc.) and techniques used
- Photo or photographs, video, etc. of the piece, showing it clearly and to best advantage. Entries may be sent on CD or hard copy. If hard copy, photos must be 5”x7” or larger, and in full colour.
All entries will be acknowledged, and finalists will be selected from all entries. Finalists will then be asked to send their piece for final assessment by the judging panel.
Entries will be judged by a panel of people from the textile, fashion and fibre industries. Judges’ decisions will be final.
Finalist and winning pieces
- Will be displayed/shown at the awards presentation event, to which all entrants will be invited.
- Finalists’ work will feature in the Designs section of the knitalpaca web site
- Winners’ work will be featured in a future issue of the national magazine ‘Australian Knitting’.
- Cash prizes will be awarded to section winners, and other awards made at the discretion of the judges.
